Analysing Conventional Film Noir Trailers - 'The Maltese Falcon'

I am now going to analyse some trailers from the film noir and neo-noir genres to identify any genre conventions which appear.

The first trailer is for the classic film noir 'The Maltese Falcon'.

The trailer for 'The Maltese Falcon' contains the following film noir conventions:

• Dialogue - typical of noir genre, fast-paced, back and forth
• Character types - femme fatale, don, 'detective', henchman, victim
• Narrative structure - an investigation, revealing his thoughts at the end
• Lighting - lots of low-key lighting
• Enigma/mystery
• Smoke/cigarettes
• Mysterious music
• Gangster elements - drugs
• Central character is sucked into a narrative
• Costumes typical of the genre
